To cultivate a thriving community where the children and youth of Greater Hartford are empowered through culture, creativity, and confidence—becoming proud, purpose-driven individuals who carry forward the rich legacy of Caribbean and Caribbean-American artistic expression.
The Dance Troupe is committed to fostering the social, emotional, spiritual, academic, and character development of children and youth. Recognizing talent as a powerful vehicle for personal growth, the company uses culturally rooted dance, music, and drama to help young people in Greater Hartford build confidence, embrace their heritage, and develop self-esteem.

Founded by Valencia Coleman in 1982 in response to the lack of Caribbean arts programming in Hartford, the Dance Troupe began with Saturday classes in a small room at the West Indian American Social Club. The Troupe debuted in Hartford’s West Indian Carnival parade that summer, receiving overwhelming support. From 5 adults and 30 youth, the Troupe grew to over 12 adults and 70 youth by 1995, performing throughout Hartford and New York.
With increased popularity, in 1997 we officially became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Today, we engage over 300 students annually and continue to serve as a cultural hub for Hartford’s Caribbean and African American communities.
We serve a primarily low-income, North End Hartford community with a large Caribbean immigrant population. Our programs provide safe, enriching environments for students from diverse and underserved backgrounds, including youth from single-parent households and those facing behavioral and academic challenges.
Through participation in workshops, performances, and costume design, students develop self-discipline, leadership, and pride. Alumni often return as instructors, choreographers, and community role models.
The Program runs from the last week of June to the first week of August.
Your contributions help us provide scholarships, cover transportation costs, and expand our studio space—making our programming accessible to more children and families.
We welcome community members who want to get involved hands-on!
